Algebra — one screen
≈35% of Math · 13–15 questions · the largest domain on the test. With Advanced Math it is 70% of the section, so a student weak here cannot be rescued by anything else.
The five skills
| Skill | What it asks | The move that answers it |
|---|---|---|
| Linear equations in one variable | Solve, or find the value that makes it have no solution / infinite solutions | Isolate. For "no solution", match the x-terms and mismatch the constants |
| Linear equations in two variables | Write the equation a situation describes, or read one | Start + rate × time. Name what x is before writing anything |
| Linear functions | Interpret slope and intercept in context | Slope = per-unit rate, intercept = value at zero. Always |
| Systems of two linear equations | Solve, or say how many solutions there are | Substitute if one variable is alone; add or subtract if neither is |
| Linear inequalities | Solve, or pick the region a constraint describes | Same as an equation, but flip the sign when you multiply or divide by a negative |
The three forms, and when each is handed to you
| Form | Looks like | Gives you instantly |
|---|---|---|
| Slope-intercept | y = mx + b | Rate m, starting value b |
| Standard | Ax + By = C | Intercepts: set x = 0, then y = 0 |
| Point-slope | y − y₁ = m(x − x₁) | A line through a known point |
m = (y2 − y1) / (x2 − x1)
parallel → same m
perpendicular → m1 × m2 = −1
How many solutions a system has
| Case | What you see | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| One solution | Different slopes | The lines cross once |
| No solution | Same slope, different intercept | Parallel, never meet |
| Infinitely many | One equation is a multiple of the other | The same line twice |
Half the "no solution" questions on this test are that middle row, dressed up.
Where points go
- Not naming the variable. Write "x = minutes after 9am" before you write the equation. Most wrong answers here are right answers to the other variable.
- Answering the wrong question. It asks for x + 3, not x. Underline what is wanted.
- Forgetting to flip the inequality when multiplying or dividing by a negative.
- Reading the intercept as the rate. In h = 18 + 4.5t, 18 is the start and 4.5 is the rate. The test asks which is which more often than it asks you to solve anything.
- Grinding algebra the calculator could do. Desmos is built in for the whole section. Graph both sides and read the intersection when the algebra gets ugly.
Speed
95 seconds a question is the Math average, and algebra questions should cost you less than that. The hard questions sit at the end of each module; time banked here is what pays for them. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so nothing is ever left blank.
